I am only one,
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do
the something that I can do.
I have always loved this quote. So I read up on the writer, Edward Everett Hale.
"Man of Letters,
Preacher of the Gospel,
Prophet of Peace,
is the inscription chiseled at the feet of a statute of this great American author, orator, historian and Unitarian minister in Boston. Hale was the son of Nathan Hale ("I only regret that I have one life to lose for my country.") and nephew of famous orator and Unitarian minister, Edward Everett. His upbringing affected him profoundly. He grew up in a family that was caring and imaginative and "he became a man who saw the world as a family of brothers and sisters to be loved and cared for." I can get behind that 100%.
Hale was a deeply patriotic man. As the son of one of our most well-known patriots, Nathan Hale, he took that passion very seriously. "However, his patriotism was not a belief that his country could do no wrong. Edward Everett Hale balanced the ideal of sacrificing for one's country with the equally important ideal of speaking out against wrongs that would endanger the national morality." This, I find most compelling.
In the past year I have witnessed a lot of unbridled hatred, intolerance and fear that is born of ignorance, misunderstanding and a lack of common decency and civility. I look forward to a world filled with hope not hurt, love not hate and light not darkness. Now more than ever.
I realized that I was feeling quite stuck about this, not sure that anything I could do would matter. But then I remembered that quote. And I realized that we all can do something.
Art is my therapy and my way to make sense of the world. So I created these little owl pendants as my way of coping and contributing. I call them IONU as they will be a watchful eye on you. They have a bit of a steampunk vibe, with various beads and charms embedded in two-part epoxy clay, colored in metallic powdered mica pigments.
And to do the "something that I can do" I will be donating $20 of the purchase price of the IONU owl pendant to one of the causes of your choice in the drop-down menu.
We need to be ever more watchful of our rights and ever more supportive of each other. My hope is that the IONU Owls will be a tangible reminder of our need to seek wisdom and understanding, promote tolerance and respect and fight for the basic fundamental rights of all while watching out and protecting each other, especially those that are most vulnerable in this world.
